the recipe الوصفة

Every moment of our lives provides a learning experience, but rarely are we taught how to recognize this learning. If we could understand how to teach ourselves outside of our education, wouldn’t we be better students of life? What could we learn to make our lives more meaningful?  What have we learned so far? Could reflection reveal new depth?

These are some of the questions we asked ourselves while designing Taghmees Social Kitchen. Taghmees is a homegrown recipe, a medium for learning and practicing healing in a community with others who share a mutual desire to reclaim life and create meaning outside of dominant narratives. Our learning happens organically and each session takes on the flavor of its participants, food, and fabric.

In Arabic, taghmees means the act of dipping, often used to refer to dipping by hand into food with bread, or the act of immersing yourself deeply into anything – a discussion, an experience, or life.  For us, Taghmees is an attitude towards living fully and firsthand; opening one’s self up to learning every step of the way.
